Why High level Cholesterol is Harmful ?

Cholesterol is a type of waxy, fat-like substance that is naturally produced by the liver and is also present in certain foods. While cholesterol is important for the body to function properly, high levels of cholesterol can increase the risk of developing various health problems.

  • It can contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries. When there is too much cholesterol in the blood, it can build up on the walls of the arteries, leading to the formation of plaque. Over time, this plaque can narrow the arteries, reducing blood flow and increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Types of Cholesterol

There are two types of cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).

LDL cholesterol is often referred to as “bad” cholesterol because it can contribute to the buildup of plaques in the arteries, while HDL cholesterol is often referred to as “good” cholesterol because it can help to remove excess cholesterol from the blood.

Recommended Cholesterol Level

The recommended levels of cholesterol vary depending on the individual’s risk factors for cardiovascular disease. In general, the American Heart Association recommends the following levels:

  • Total cholesterol: Less than 200 mg/dL
  • LDL cholesterol: Less than 100 mg/dL
  • HDL cholesterol: 40 mg/dL or higher for men, 50 mg/dL or higher for women
  • Triglycerides: Less than 150 mg/dL

However, these levels may be adjusted based on other factors, such as age, gender, family history, and the presence of other medical conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension.


It is important to maintain healthy cholesterol levels to reduce the risk of developing these health problems. This can be done through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and, in some cases, medication.
